PILGRIM'S REST NATURE RESERVE

Conjuring up images of yester-year, the old goldminer's village of Pilgrim's Rest lies about 30km south-west of Bourke's Luck Potholes. This quaint little town has been declared a national monument, and is surrounded by the reserve which covers some 1 899ha. To date no game species have been introduced, but visitors may spot mountain reedbuck and common duiker. This is a birder's paradise (180 bird species), and the lucky few may spot rare species such as the broad-trailed warbler, Cape eagle owl, blue swallow and narina trogon. Bird-watchers are advised to visit the reserve out of season as big crowds flock here during the school holidays. A comprehensive birdlist is available.

Fishing is allowed throughout the year. Mpumalanga trout-fishing licences can be obtained at the information centre in town. Other activities include hiking and horse-riding. Visitors have access to numerous picnic sites with fireplaces. The reserve is open throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.

There is no accommodation in the reserve itself. In Pilgrim's Rest, Aventura Resorts has two hotels (one of them the famous Royal Hotel), eleven historic cottages and a camping site with 250 stands.

How to get there:
Public roads (the R533 and the road northwards to Bourke's Luck) traverse the reserve.
